and one thing that these activists did was educate latino voters. instead of just lined them up, educating them on how to vote and specifically how to vote in arizona. because we have a mail in ballot process because of a voter id law in place. so a lot of the organizations were educating latino voters, look at it may be easier for you to sign up on the mailing list so that we don't have to do with identification, what have you don't have the proper id to vote in person. i think that explains whether so many mail-in ballots cast in the general election 2012. >> i want to get back to the senate race and equipment but stick with a voter id requirement and whatnot, and talk about the restriction, what exactly the requirements are. in particular, there's been questioned at the national level about republicans, whether they're using voter id requirements to clamp down on voter turnout from certain areas. one of the concerns? how our latino voters in arizona from in arizona from how in arizona to how our beginning with the? are there problems we are heari

as we all know, he has spent countless hours here on the floor educating, exhorting senators on budget issues, driving home his points by displaying a seemingly endless array of charts and graphs. indeed, i would note that in 2001, the committee on rules and administration assigned senator conrad his own printing equipment because he was producing more charts than all of his colleagues combined. the other day we had this so-called secret santa that senator franken had established here in which we draw names out of a hat and we exchange these little -- little gifts here. and you never know who's going to give you a gift. you know who you're giving to but you don't know who's giving to you. well, it turned out that my gift giver was senator conrad. so i got a nice little -- a bo book, but most importantly, i got three charts. it starts with access to education. and how impossible it would've been for me or any of my siblings to go to college if there weren't pell grants, student loans. secondly, is the social reality, social changes. we can't separate economic well being over social well being. one of the leading causes of lack of preparedness is the fact preparedness is a factor in many and kids in america that are growing up in very difficult circumstances, raised by heroic parents, sometimes a grandmother, a dangerous neighborhood in substandard housing with poor nutrition, no access to private health care in schools benefiting. those kids are going to struggle. they don't go to afterschool activities because the parents can't afford the fees and they can't get out of work and time to take them. there's some heroic single parents out there who have done some amazing things and they will be the first was to tell you, it is hard. and yet we can't -- if we don't address it. government can have or will but ultimately civil society has a bigge
